High-Speed Metering Pump: Working Principle, Advantages, Disadvantages, Features, Applications & Summary 3

1. Working Principle

High-speed metering pumps operate on positive displacement principles, but their "high-speed" designation comes from one of two distinct design approaches:

Electromagnetic/Solenoid-Driven Diaphragm Pumps
These pumps use an electromagnetic coil to drive a diaphragm at high frequencies. The EWP Series, for example, operates at 360 strokes per minute (SPM), significantly faster than conventional solenoid pumps. The high stroke rate divides the total flow into many small increments, providing finer resolution and smoother chemical feed.

High-Speed Gear Pumps
These are precision gear pumps designed to operate at elevated speeds, with speed ranges typically from 30 to 500 RPM. They utilize external roller bearings lubricated separately from the pumped fluid, allowing them to handle low-lubricity media at high speeds without premature wear.

2. Advantages

  • High resolution and precise control — Higher operating speeds divide flow into smaller increments, enabling finer adjustments; speeds adjustable in 1 SPM increments

  • Reduced pulsation — Faster stroke rates create smoother, more continuous flow compared to slow "slug feeding" pumps

  • Wide turndown ratio — Combined with stroke length adjustment, some models achieve ratios up to 1800:1, eliminating the need for multiple pump sizes

  • Extended service life — Dual bearing support in high-speed designs reduces component wear; some models offer 2-year full pump warranty

  • Sealed product space — Gear-type high-speed pumps isolate pumped media to the gear cavity only, with external bearings for low-lubricity media; supports lubricity as low as 0.01 cP to 20,000 cP

  • Compact design — Some high-speed gear pumps weigh as little as 1.4 kg with 65 mm diameter, saving valuable space

3. Disadvantages

  • Not suitable for fluids with solids — Like most precision metering pumps, solids can damage internal components

  • Higher cost — Precision engineering and high-speed components typically cost more than standard pumps

  • Requires clean media — Contaminants can affect performance and cause wear

  • Specialized bearing design needed — Gear-type high-speed pumps require external lubrication systems for bearings when handling low-lubricity media

4. Key Features

  • Operating speeds: 30–500 RPM (gear type) or up to 360 SPM (solenoid diaphragm type)

  • Flow rates: from fractional mL/min to 25 L/h or higher

  • Pressure capability: up to 300 PSI (20 bar) standard; some gear pumps reach 250 bar

  • Materials: Stainless steel, PTFE, and corrosion-resistant alloys available

  • Control options: Manual, analog, pulse (multiply/divide), batch, and digital control with RS485/Modbus

  • High compression ratio for reliable priming with off-gassing fluids (e.g., sodium hypochlorite)

5. Applications

Industry Applications
Chemical Processing Corrosive acid transfer, low-lubricity chemical dosing
Polyurethane (PUR) Metering polyols and isocyanates in foam, insulation, and molding production
Water & Wastewater Chemical feed for disinfection (chlorine, sodium hypochlorite), pH control
Food & Beverage Sanitary dosing for syrups, flavorings, and ingredients
Pharmaceutical Precision liquid filling and ingredient dosing
Semiconductor Photoresist and electrolyte solution injection

6. Summary

The high-speed metering pump is a precision dosing solution that excels in applications requiring fine resolution, reduced pulsation, and reliable performance with challenging fluids. Its key strengths are high-frequency operation for smooth flow, wide turndown ratios, and (in gear designs) sealed product spaces for handling low-lubricity media. Its main limitations include higher cost and sensitivity to solid contaminants. It remains essential in chemical processing, PUR manufacturing, and precision dosing applications where accuracy and reliability are paramount.
