기어 계량 펌프의 작동 원리인 기어 계량 펌프는 서로 맞물리는 한 쌍의 기어를 통해 이루어지며, 그 중 하나는 구동 기어이고 다른 하나는 구동 기어에 의해 구동되어 맞물리고 회전하다. 기어와 펌프 케이싱 사이에 작은 틈이 있습니다. 기어가 회전하면 기어 톱니가 점차 풀리는 흡입실에서 톱니 사이의 밀폐 부피가 증가하여 부분 진공이 형성되고 압력차의 작용으로 액체가 흡입실로 흡입됩니다. 기어가 회전함에 따라 액체는 기어 내에서 두 방향으로 나누어집니다. 하우징과 함께 기어에 의해 앞으로 밀려 배수 구멍으로 보내집니다. 배수 구멍에서는 두 개의 기어가 점차 맞물려 부피가 감소하고 기어 사이의 액체가 배수구로 압착됩니다.
